Product 2888 DESCRIPTION:
Since 1957, AutoMeter has set the standard in performance, accuracy and durability with their legendary Tachometers. The absolute pinnacle of engineering and technology, it’s no wonder AutoMeter can lay claim to more motorsports victories than every other gauge manufacturer combined. The patented air core meter movement, wound in house to exacting standards, can move the needle from 0 - 5,000 rpm in 333 milliseconds. An inaugural inductee to the Hot Rod Speed Parts Hall of Fame, no other tachometer on the market has had anything approaching its impact on professional racing. Built for a lifetime of service under the harshest conditions, this is the no compromise tach for no compromise builds. When you’re ready for the best, there isn’t another choice.
Hooking up a tach on a diesel can be challenging due to the lack of ignition system. Solutions up to this point have been complicated and temperamental. AutoMeter makes the process incredibly easy and affordable with this tachometer that utilizes an inductive pick-up. Simply attach the included pickup to the outside of the alternator and calibrate with a rotary dial on the back of the tach. It will work just about any engine with a crank driven alternator, not limited to only diesel applications.
Feature Points
Traditional incandescent lighting illuminates around the perimeter of the dial
12 and 16 volt compatible, well-suited with nearly every street car or race car electrical system
Gauge kit includes alternator pickup, bulb and socket assembly, red and green bulb covers, mounting hardware, and detailed instructions for installation
AutoMeter’s race proven air-core electric tachometers provide quick and accurate readings with a needle so responsive it can go from 0 - full scale in 333 milliseconds

Thank you for your question. This will only work on diesel applications. The probe will need to be mounted on the alternator in order to obtain the correct signal.

Will this unit be OK for 91 C1500 Chev Silverado? Where is best to mount this in your opinion ---on the Steering Column, Top of the Dash, Under the Dash or Pillar Mount on drivers side? Or, do you have another unit and installation suggestion? Thanks.

Thank you for your question. Yes, this should work fine for your application. Mounting location is personal preference and varies per application. The pedestal is designed to be versatile and installed in the location you think is best for your field of vision without obstructing anything else.

How far away can the probe be mounted from the Tacho? We are looking at putting it in a rear engine Diesel motor home of approx 7m length, so would need a cable run of say 10m. Do you need to put in any particular type of cable to shield the signal?

Can this unit be flushed mounted

I bought and installed this tachometer. Mounted it flush into a modified dash. On the back of the housing cup is a screw to remove the cup from the tach. I bought a slightly longer screw and used the cup to sandwich the dash plate between the tach housing and cup housing. Don't over tighten it.
It's worked great and has stayed tight for over 4 years now.

Hi there, How well does the pick up work when it's on a 4wd that will be subjected to a lot of mud and water exposure. I am looking at putting one on my Toyota 1HD-FT build that has the wires from the diesel pump for the factory tacho. Can I use them?.

Hi Lawrence, thank you so much for contacting us. For one, these units are not water sealed and are designed for use inside a vehicle. The tach itself, while durable, isn't designed for exposure to the elements.
As for connection to the vehicle, you'll need to use the included alternator pickup. It will not work with the wiring for your factory tach. Hope this helps!

Can this Tach work with a TCI EZ-TCU? Which wire is the feed wire if I'm using the alternator probe?

Answer this Question
Matt from AutoMeter · 7 years ago
Hi there, thank you for connecting with us. Our diesel tachometer will work only with the alternator probe that we include. That probe can be seen here: https://www.autometer.com/alternator-probe-diesel-tach-adapt-replacement.html
While we're not familiar with the TCI unit, it may provide more of a standard tachometer signal.

Can this tachometer be panel mounted?

answer
Answer this Question
Matt from AutoMeter · 7 years ago
Hi there, thank you for connecting with us. This tachometer features a cup that can be removed to expose a case that will mount into a 2-5/8" diameter hole. However, there are no mounting studs like you would find on a traditional in-dash instrument, so you would have to come up with a way to secure the instrument in the dash.
