Hooking up a tach on a diesel can be challenging due to the lack of ignition system. Solutions up to this point have been complicated and temperamental. AutoMeter makes the process incredibly easy and affordable with this tachometer that utilizes an inductive pick-up. Simply attach the included pickup to the outside of the alternator and calibrate with a rotary dial on the back of the tach. It will work just about any engine with a crank driven alternator, not limited to only diesel applications.

Unfortunately our diesel tachometers can only work off of the alternator.

Can I use an old style 12V generator to get the signal puls? Gauge 3788 for Diesel.

I have a denso alternator with a wire added for a tach hookup. This is on a 1993 dodge Cummins diesel. Do you have a pedestal mounted tach for this application?

Hi Butch,
Our diesel tachometers use an inductive pickup. None of out tachometers will work with the tach wire you describe.

Thank you for your inquiry. The power, ground, and lamp wires are 4 feet long. The probe wire is 10 feet.

If the LED light is connected to a 12VDC potentiometer/rheostat (dimmer switch) will it work (reduce light output)? Looking to use this on a sailboat; need to make it very dim at night or cover it up. Thanks

Hybrid owners (toyota and lexus) in internet forums are looking for tachometers with easy install OBD2 plugin version. And this 5000 rpm display is perfect! I would buy one even if it costs $300-400 dolllars. Can you produce OBD2 plugin version?

Referring to Cam's question and Joseph's answer. What size hole would the tach fit in for mounting in a dash? Can the optional bezels be used to compensate for a larger hole size? Are there any drawings of the tach and bezels that show diameters?

Unfortunately, as this tach was never intended for in dash mounting and lacks any provisions necessary to do so, we can't provide direct support on how to do it. There is no "right way" to accomplish this and it is not a recommended or intended application. If you are uncomfortable with fabrication work it would be best to seek the assistance of a professional technician.
There is no appreciable difference in bezel sizes; you can see the published dimensions on figure C3 of this document:

Hi Cam, thank you so much for contacting us. While there are no provisions for in-dash mounting of this tach, it certainly could be done with a little creativity. I've personally used some weatherstripping and a hose clamp to accomplish this. While not the most elegant solution, it's functional and all behind the dash, so you don't see it. Hope this helps!
