Works as intended.
Fitted this dimmer controller as part of a stand alone circuit. Gauge lighting independent from dash lighting, with its own switch. This dimmer controller works very well with good adjustment values in that setup.

Dimming Control Module
Bought auto meter 4th gen Ram factory gauges (pyrometer, trans temp, and boost) and the dimmer module. I hooked up the dimmer module to the trucks dimmer switch and the pyrometer gauge and trans temp gauge dim when you dim the dash lights; however the boost gauge doesn’t. The boost gauge can only be dimmed by the dimmer module directly.

This dimmer is generally used when you have a bunch of our LED gauges and you would like to have them all running on one dimmer control. You can still use the car dimmer switch on your vehicle, this item is not a necessity for LED gauges.

I have the dimmer hooked up to a shift indicator white wire. When on bright and I start to dim it goes black then as I turn it goes to very dim on up to a little less than full bright. Is this how it should work?

Cut this piece of junk dimmer switch out of your system and throw it away. Mine never worked and I bought two of them before I realized how screwed up they are. Ask yourself this question, how come Autometer does not have tech support available to answer these wiring questions or at least give you guidance. Instead, they pawn this off on past customers to diagnose this problem. You're about the 5th guy to ask me to help with this dimmer. Honest to god, just throw it away!
