If you are driving along and notice a burning oil smell, its likely due to your valve cover gaskets failing. Over time the soft rubber turns to brittle plastic which allows for oil to get past the seal. On BMW straight 6 engines, the oil usually leaks out on the lowest side of the engine, which in this case is directly onto the exhaust manifold and exhaust manifold gasket. This leak causes causes the "burning oil" smell that is commonly associated with failed valve cover gaskets.
