One of the most popular exterior modifications for the E46 M3 is installing the trunk lid from the famous M3 CSL. So if you have installed a CSL tailgate (or plan to) and would like to upgrade your license plate lights to genuine BMW LED units, you need a harness to convert the E46 plugs to accept the modern LED license plate lights.

The genuine E46 M3 CSL tailgate style does not have the handle strip that also housed the trunk release button, so these license plate lights are installed directly in the trunk lid.
