The primary function of the Diesel Particulate Filter Sensor is to monitor how much soot there is in the Diesel Particulate Filter and to monitor its performance by measuring the exhaust back pressure upstream and downstream of the DPF and calculating the difference in pressures found to determine the level of soot accumulation. If the sensor becomes faulty you may notice that the regeneration process will become delayed, randomized, or nonexistent which could clog up the DPF and potentially cause engine damage long term.

Other signs of a failing pressure sensor include an increase in fuel consumption, high engine and transmission temperatures, increased soot and/or black smoke from the exhaust, hard starts, and an illuminated check engine light, signifying a diagnostic trouble code has been stored in the ECU.
