COMPATIBILITY

  • Universal for use with external electric or mechanical fuel pumps

A fuel surge tank (FST) is designed to prevent fuel starvation to the engine on vehicles with inadequate fuel tank baffling. The FST fuel pump(s) directly feed the engine. The volume of fuel inside the surge tank acts as a buffer to always keep the engine supplied with fuel. This volume is maintained by the main fuel tank's pump as well as the fuel returning from the fuel pressure regulator. Excess fuel in the surge tank is returned back to the vehicle's main fuel tank. The surge tank also provides a quick and easy way to upgrade any standard fuel system. This is an excellent fueling solution for vehicles installing large demand power upgrades such as forced induction.

LIFT PUMP

When installing a surge tank, the main tank's fuel pump becomes the lift pump, and this pump is responsible for keeping the surge tank full at all times with the exception of moments the fuel is pulled away from the main tank's pickup during g-force starvation events.

To ensure that this pump is capable of supplying enough fuel to keep the surge tank full, target a flow rate that is around 40% to 50% of the flow rate of the surge tank pump(s). These target flow rates are variable so they are just an estimate on what will be needed. Each specific installation may require more, or less lift pump flow rate.

As an example for sizing a lift pump, when installing a surge tank pump with a flow rate of 1100lph at 40psi will need a lift pump around 440lph to 550lph at 40psi to keep up. The lift pump will not pressurize since it has an open flowing supply and overflow circuit, so it will flow much more than the flow rate advertised at 40psi.

MOUNTING

  • The underside of the surge tank is suitable for uneven surfaces commonly found in the trunk of a vehicle.
  • The surge tank should not be mounted horizontally as the pick-up(s) will be prone to drawing in air pockets.
  • Stainless Steel Mounting Hardware is included to aid in mounting. Additional hardware may be required.
