Replacing your air filter is cheap maintenance and can even help improve performance. The air filter in your M3 should be replaced at regular intervals. This air filter cleans roughly 9000 gallons of air for every gallon of gasoline your engine burns.
Please note: Mahle and BMW discontinued early production air filters, p/n 13727838805, and consolidated the engine air filter under p/n 13727838804. 13727838804 does not fit early production air filter housings. To install p/n 13727838804 in pre-9/2009 E9X M3's you need to update the air filter housing assembly to p/n 13717838566 or find the spring loaded support from p/n 13717838566 to install in your original air filter housing. The difference between the pre-9/2009 and post 9//2009 air filter housings is the length and shape of the spring-loaded air filter support. Your alternate option to OE paper air filters is to upgrade to a BMC or aFe filter which still has the original pre-9/2009 design.
An engine air filter is a critical component of a vehicle's intake system, allowing clean fresh outside air to enter the combustion chamber and prevent dust, dirt, and other contaminants from entering the engine. Your engine's air filter sits within the air intake box and traps particles as air flows into the engine. This ensures that only clean air reaches the combustion chamber, which provides optimal engine performance and fuel efficiency and reduces emissions.
Engine Air Filter Failure Symptoms- Clogging: Over time, your air filter can become clogged with dirt, dust, and debris, reducing the amount of fresh air that reaches the engine. This can lead to poor engine performance, reduced fuel efficiency, and increased emissions.
- Moisture Contamination: Exposure to excessive moisture, whether from driving in heavy rain or through water, can cause the air filter to become saturated. A wet filter can restrict airflow, further deteriorate over time, and lead to potential engine damage.
- Age: Over time, the materials in the air filter can degrade, losing their ability to filter out contaminants effectively. An old air filter may become brittle and prone to tearing. It is recommended to inspect your engine air filter every 15 - 30,000 miles
- Decreased Fuel Efficiency: When the air filter is blocked, the engine struggles to get the proper air-fuel mixture, causing it to burn more fuel to compensate, resulting in reduced fuel efficiency and reduced performance
- Misfire: Inadequate airflow can lead to incomplete combustion, causing the engine to misfire, which might cause hesitation or weak power build-up under load.
