Does this replace the existing piece or does it overlay the original A-Pillar trim piece?

This pillar is a replacement, meaning the original plastic is removed and this piece replaces it. It is not an overlay type.

Why can't this work in the convertible?

Thank you for your question. The convertible A-Pillar was constructed differently to accommodate the convertible roof. This causes the A-Pillar on the coupe and convertible to have slightly different fitment, which is why this will only work on the coupe, and not the convertible.
