can the bosch mechanical water temp gauge be purchased with a 12 foot sensor?

answer
Answer this Question

All of our mechanical temperature gauges can be purchased with lengths of up to 20 ft. For any gauge listed with 6 ft lengths, we can make a gauge for you, but the gauge has to be ordered over the phone as a special order. The same would apply for gauges that you need longer than 12 ft as we can make the length a maximum of 20 ft.

WHAT IS "AIR-CORE"?

answer
Answer this Question
Natalia from AutoMeter · 4 years ago
Hello! An air core, at its essence, is a small magnetic core with copper windings around it that will move in relationship to voltage it sees. This is regulated by an electronic sending unit, which will change its resistance to ground based on the reading. As a temperature or pressure changes, the resistance the gauge measures and thereby the voltage the air core sees varies dictating that the indicator move to a calibrated position on the dial. These gauges are physically differentiated from the other two by their use of a smaller percentage of the dial (90º of rotation), hence “short sweep”. Needle movement will most often start around the 9 o’clock position and move to the 3 o’clock position at full scale.

Hello, I bought two of these gauges for 502 MPI Mercury Marine engines. The temps read equally high on both motors (50 degrees over stat opening temp), is there a sender change required? Neither motor seemed to operate hot.

Thank you so much for contacting us. These gauge should be using AutoMeter sending units. They are not compatible with any other senders as the resistance range is different. This is the correct sending unit for these gauges:
https://www.autometer.com/temperature-sender-short-sweep-electric-marine.html
If you are using the correct sending unit and the gauge still seems to read high, the number one cause is resistance or interference to ground on the gauge circuit. As temp gauges operate over a wide resistance scale and references ground to read, any interference on that ground circuit will cause the gauge to read erroneously high. One major culprit we see is the gauge ground being tied in with the ground circuit for the gauge lights. Make sure each gauge has a solid ground away from other electrical consumers. In the vast majority of cases, this corrects any high readings. Hope this helps!
