A traditionally designed unit, Installation requires the use of a 10 gauge wire or larger for safe operation.

Can this ammeter be used with a generator with a max output of 17 amps? Does Autometer make ammeters with a 30-0-30 scale?

This gauge will work on any vehicle with an alternator or generator producing 50 amps or less. We do not make a 30 amp ammeter.

so what happens if a modern high amp alternator is connected to this gauge? does it just fry the gauge or does the car catch fire? can you make an ammeter that can work with a higher amp alternator?

We recommend using a voltmeter for that type of application.

Thank you so much for contacting us. No external shunt is used with this ammeter. It should be noted that this is intended only for usage with vintage alternators - it will not support the type of current generated by modern alternators. We don't recommend much more than a 40 amp alternator with this gauge. Hope this helps!
