Does this fuel guage work with the stock fuel sending unit 73 oms empty 10 oms full in 1985 Jeep CJ-7?

This should be the correct resistance range for your Jeep. That said, Jeep is known to have some variation. Therefore it is a good idea to measure resistance through your sender at empty and full prior to purchase.

Thank you for your question. For a 1998 XJ, it is 220 ohms when empty & 20 ohms when full. A 240/33 ohm gauge may be close, but will not be perfect.

Q&A explains the following, But consumer needs to know IF this guage spec will preform 1/2 at what ohms..?
..The short sweep electric fuel gauge manufactured by Auto Meter for the Ford 73-10ohm range is calibrated for the original Ford factory supplied, non-linear, fuel level sender design. If you view the gauge (dial itself)..? you will notice that the halfway point in the gauge is in fact not centered in the field in order for the calibration to match this special sender.
The Ford Fuel Level sensor with a 73-10ohm range operates with the following ohm ranges for Full, Half, Empty, and Below Empty:
Full: 10ohms
Half Tank: 25ohms
Empty: 50ohms
Pointer Width Below E: 73ohms
..? What guage #s preform to this spec, please ! Bought a non-linear #1316 as recom by cus svc- and it does not match, (25ohms displays 1/4) so which really do..?

Will this work with original sending unit? Will needle bounce when Jeep is moving and fuel sloshes?

Answer this Question
Alex at AutoMeter · 5 years ago
Thank you for your question. This gauge operates on a 73 Ω Empty / 10 Ω Full (NON-LINEAR) scale. This is the most common Jeep fuel sending unit and should not bounce if your sending unit is in good working order.

Is this gauge 880428 the right one to install on a 1978 CJ5 Jeep 6 cyl. 258 Eng.?
1
answer
Answer this Question
Zach from AutoMeter · 6 years ago
Thank you for the question. The 880428 should work for you as long as your original sender is functioning properly. 880428 is designed to work with an original sender, which is non-linear. Most aftermarket and reproduction senders are linear and would require a gauge like model 2519: https://www.autometer.com/2-1-16-fuel-level-73-10-linear-traditional-chrome.html
Here are some details on the linear vs non-linear senders: https://www.autometer.com/resources/index/faq_view/id/12
