BMW's B48 engine has shown itself to be a robust and reliable engine across numerous platforms. However, nothing is perfect. One engineering decision BMW made was to construct the oil filter housing from a plastic composite. One thing that seems to be a common theme when plastic composites are used is they tend to fail in the long run. Over time, the oil filter housing on the B48 engine has shown itself to be a major weak point. There are a few common failure modes:

• Broken housing due to overtightening of oil filter cap
• Leaking from perimeters of oil filter housing
• Coolant and oil mixing due to cross-contamination from the degradation of the oil filter housing

The first-generation B48 engine specifically has had a major issue with coolant and engine oil mixing due to material degradation. This problem if not caught in time will cause engine failure. This Rein oil filter housing made from aluminum will not suffer from the same failure that the OE plastic oil filter housing and will be a lifelong component for your B48-powered BMW.

In any of the above cases, the oil filter housing is going to need to be replaced as an entire assembly. To perform this job you are going to need to remove the intake manifold/charge cooler assembly, strut tower reinforcement brace, and a whole bunch of plumbing. This kit includes all the base components you will need to replace the oil filter housing as an entire assembly. The replacement oil filter housing includes the oil filter housing gasket set, p/n 11425B3A1A5, engine oil cooler seal set, p/n 11428591462, oil filter, p/n 11428575211, and oil filter cap, p/n 11428507685.

This kit is intended for automatic transmission vehicles. You will need to check the fill level and add transmission fluid to the automatic transmission because the trans cooler system needs to be opened. You will want to order an 8HP compatible transmission fluid, G48 (Blue) or HT12 (Green) antifreeze depending on your vehicle and what coolant fill it has, plus your choice of 6 liters of engine oil (see recommended items for suggestions).

Critical Torque specifications:
Intake plenum to cylinder head - 10Nm
Coolant line to crankcase - 10Nm
Oil-to-water heat exchanger to full-flow oil filter - 10Nm
Oil filter module to crankcase - 8Nm
Positive battery cable to alternator - 19Nm
Cable channel to cylinder head cover - 6Nm
Engine Oil drain plug (Renew the sealing ring) - 25Nm
Battery cable, positive terminal, battery cable, negative terminal, SBK, IBS - 5Nm
Tension strut to body - 56Nm + 90°
Tension strut to body - 56Nm + 90°
Transmission fill plug - 35Nm
