The cure to a clunky rear end and drivetrain vibrations

If your BMW E30 has strange drivetrain vibrations or you can hear an audible clunking from the rear we recommend inspecting this mount which is pressed in to the differential cover. If you find that this bushing is torn and the differential can move freely we recommend replacing it immediately.

Differential Mount

A differential mount is a component that secures the differential to the vehicle’s chassis or subframe. It absorbs and dampens the vibrations and torque generated by the differential, helping to maintain stability and alignment within the drivetrain. Differential mounts are typically made of rubber or polyurethane and play a crucial role in transferring power smoothly to the wheels.

Differential Mount Failure Symptoms

  • Clunking or Banging Noises: A common symptom of a failing differential mount is clunking or banging noises, especially when accelerating, decelerating, or shifting gears, as the differential shifts due to loose or damaged mounts
  • Vibrations: Worn or damaged mounts can cause excessive vibrations in the drivetrain, leading to noticeable shaking or vibrating felt in the rear of the vehicle or even in the cabin.
