Product Information
The S54 engine is known for many things. One of its downfalls was the early production E46 M3 rod bearing failures due to mis-manufactured bearings by BMW's supplier. While BMW addressed this issue on early production S54 engines, there are still circumstances in which replacing rod bearings is required on later production S54 engines. This kit includes everything you will need to do the job.
This kit is intended for later production engines or engines with updated OE rod bearings that use M10x1.25 E12 torx bolts. In this application, the connecting rod bolts must be replaced (included in the kit) and the following torquing sequence must be followed:
First sequence:
1) Jointing torque - 5 Nm (~4 ft lbs)
2) Setting torque - 20 Nm (~15 ft lbs)
3) Angle of rotation - 105 ° in single stroke
4) Back off bolt approximately one turn and then re tighten again in second sequence
Second sequence:
1) Jointing torque - 5 Nm (~4 ft lbs)
2) Setting torque - 20 Nm (~15 ft lbs)
3) Angle of rotation - 105 ° in single stroke
4) Back off bolt approximately one turn and then re-tighten again in third sequence
Third sequence:
1) Jointing torque - 5 Nm (~4 ft lbs)
2) Setting torque - 20 Nm (~15 ft lbs)
3) Angle of rotation - 105 ° in single stroke
Please note: Also inspect the front of your S54's oil pump housing. Some vehicles have had the oil pump chain come into contact with the housing and start removing material as a result. If this has occurred it would also be a good idea to replace the oil pump and oil pump chain/tensioner.
An Engine Connecting Rod Bearing is a precision bearing located between the connecting rod and the crankshaft journal in an internal combustion engine. Its role is to allow smooth rotation of the crankshaft while reducing friction and wear. These bearings are typically made from layers of soft metals (like copper, lead, or aluminum alloys) that can withstand high loads while still being sacrificial (wearing out before the crankshaft does).
Engine Connecting Rod Bearing Failure Symptoms- Knocking or tapping noise ("rod knock") – deep metallic knocking from the engine, especially under load or acceleration.
- Low oil pressure – worn bearings create excess clearance, reducing oil pressure.
- Metal shavings in oil – bearing material may flake off and appear in the oil or on the drain plug.
About Genuine BMW
The original parts used by BMW to build your car are available as replacement parts under the “Genuine BMW” brand. When ordering a Genuine BMW part you are guaranteed to get the same part that you would pick up from your local dealerships part department. Genuine BMW parts have been built to BMW’s stringent standards and are the same quality of the original parts used to build your Ultimate Driving Machine.
You may not realize this, but the parts that make up your BMW are not necessarily manufactured by BMW. No cause for concern, as BMW designs the part, hires a manufacturer, and ensures its quality to you. In fact, many of these manufacturers have been making parts for BMW for decades. In our industry these manufacturers are called OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers), and these are often brands you recognize, including Lemforder, ZF, Sachs, Bosch, Valeo, Zimmermann, Siemens VDO, Corteco, and more. Don’t be surprised to open that Genuine BMW parts box and find an OEM branded part inside, simply with the addition of a BMW logo.
Be sure to keep an eye out for OE tags on our product pages to quickly identify parts coming direct from OE manufacturers. That extra bit of insight could save you some serious money while shopping! Refer to our OE Academy for further information regarding the OE/OEM tags throughout the site.
