An Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve is an emissions control component that recirculates a portion of the engine’s exhaust gases back into the intake manifold. By mixing exhaust with the air-fuel charge, it lowers combustion temperatures, reducing the formation of harmful nitrogen oxides (NOx) and improving efficiency under certain conditions. Modern vehicles may use electronically controlled EGR valves for precise operation.

• Rough idle or stalling, caused by the valve sticking open and letting in too much exhaust.
• Poor performance or hesitation, often from a clogged or stuck-closed valve restricting proper gas flow.
• Check Engine Light (CEL) with related fault codes (e.g., P0401 “EGR flow insufficient” or P0402 “excessive EGR flow”).
