Product Information
Unlike timing belts, timing chains are semi permanent parts of your engine, meaning their expected lifespans are well into hundreds of thousands of miles. Timing Chain Guides are designed to align the chain so it can pass smoothly over the timing chain gears.
An engine timing chain guide is a crucial component in an engine that works alongside the timing chain. Its primary role is to guide and maintain proper alignment of the timing chain as it synchronizes the rotation of the crank and camshaft. This synchronization is essential for the precise timing of the engine's valves, allowing the intake and exhaust valves to open and close at the correct intervals. The guide ensures that the timing chain follows the correct path around the sprockets of the crankshaft and camshafts, preventing misalignment. It helps minimize excessive movement or vibration of the timing chain, which can occur during engine operation. Timing chain guides work in conjunction with the timing chain tensioner to maintain the correct tension in the chain. Proper tension is critical to prevent chain slack, which can affect engine performance or lead to damage.
Engine Timing Chain Guide Failure Symptoms- Rattling or Clattering Noise: One of the most common signs of a failing timing chain guide is a rattling or clattering noise from the engine, especially when starting the car or idling. The noise is caused by a loose or misaligned timing chain hitting or rubbing against other engine components due to a worn or broken guide
- Engine Misfires: A worn or damaged timing chain guide can cause the timing chain to slip, leading to improper timing between the crankshaft and camshaft(s). This can result in engine misfires, where the fuel-air mixture in the cylinders is not ignited at the correct time
- Engine Stalling or Hard Starting: If the timing chain guide is severely worn or broken, the timing chain may slip enough to cause the engine to stall. You may also have difficulty starting the engine, as the chain is no longer properly aligning the timing of the camshafts and crankshaft
About Genuine VW
The Volkswagen Group, also known as “VAG”, consists of Volkswagen, Audi, Lamborghini, Bentley, Bugatti, Porsche, Ducati, MAN, Scania, SEAT, and Skoda. The original parts used by VW to build your car are available as replacement parts under the “Genuine VW” brand. Manufactured under the direction of VW, expect excellent quality and a premium price since these parts are available exclusively through the VW Dealership network.
You may not realize this, but the parts that make up your VW are not necessarily manufactured by VW. No cause for concern, as VW designs the part, hires a manufacturer, and ensures its quality to you. In fact, many of these manufacturers have been making parts for VW for decades. In our industry these manufacturers are called OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers), and these are often brands you recognize, including Lemforder, ZF, Sachs, Bosch, Valeo, Zimmermann, Siemens VDO, Corteco, and more. Don’t be surprised to open that Genuine VW parts box and find an OEM branded part inside, simply with the addition of a VW logo.
Be sure to keep an eye out for OE tags on our product pages to quickly identify parts coming directly from OE manufacturers. That extra bit of insight could save you some serious money while shopping! Refer to our OE Academy for further information regarding the OE/OEM tags throughout the site.
